Reuse your translations

You build references while you translate, and memoQ stores them in databases. You can create glossaries with terms, store previous translations, add reference materials, store abbreviations, and identify and automate the translation of certain patterns.

memoQ combines the content of all these databases to offer you relevant information and suggest translations based on these.

Term base

As you translate, you can easily add terms and expressions to your term base both in the source and target languages. If the terms are no longer to be used, you can mark them forbidden. With memoQ’s term base management functionality, you can extract terms from documents and translation memories, import your existing glossaries, combine bilingual glossaries into multilingual ones, or easily add new terminology as you translate.

In memoQ, terminology is automatically detected and checked: you get a warning if you apply the wrong terminology, and you can search and replace terms across multiple documents on the go.

Adding new terms to your term base is very easy, and a large updated database can save you a lot of research and typing. memoQ also makes research easier by providing you simultaneous access to all your favorite internet reference pages with a single click of a button.

Translation memory

The translation memory is the core of translation technology. As you translate you will find language repetition along your project, which can slow down your work. A translation memory stores your translations and helps you reuse them, so you increase productivity and consistency throughout your project. With a translation memory in place you will never need to translate the same thing twice.

memoQ’s translation memory preserves context information, works in both language directions and stores information such as which document the translation comes from, who translated it and when.

Its top-notch concordance functionality allows you to find entries in the translation memory that contains specific words or sequences of words directly from the translation document, and makes recommendations on terminology, even suggesting translations after some weeks of using memoQ.

LiveDocs

LiveDocs is a set of features within memoQ that offer a corpus memory, automated alignment and the use of monolingual and bilingual reference material.

If you have a source document and its counterpart translated, for example in Microsoft Word format, you can import them into a LiveDocs corpus and memoQ will process it so that every source sentence has a target equivalent. Then you will be able to leverage these databases - without spending hours with aligning documents - as you translate.

When you start translating, source and target sentences will come up. If the target is not exactly what’s in the source, you can fix those segments on the fly, so you only spend time on looking at relevant material – not the entire documents like in other tools.

You can also use bilingual files as translation memories, offering a preview and context for the entire document. You can import monolingual documents into the Library, and check if a certain expression exists in the vocabulary of these documents. This helps terminology research, and it is highly useful for legal translators when they want to double-check what collocations exist in the target language.

The Muse

The Muse is offering automatic suggestions for target terms when you start typing words. Muses are “trained” by analyzing large amounts of translated contents that are readily available in memoQ from translation memories and LiveDocs corpora. Once a Muse is trained, it will suggest terms and recurring expressions as you type, and make translation 20-30% faster.

memoQ Web Search

memoQ Web Search allows you to select text in the source or target language of your document, and run a variety of online searches to look up details of this expression. memoQ comes pre-configured with a large set of dictionaries and reference sites but you can easily set up your preferred search engine or reference site.

How to do a web search?

You can invoke the memoQ web search by pressing Crtl+F3 in the translation grid or by right- clicking in the translation grid and choosing memoQ web search.

Collaboration

With memoQ translator pro, you can work with any company using a memoQ server. Get more jobs by accepting those sent directly from their memoQ server!

memoQ translator pro also supports discussions within the translation environment which are frequent between project managers and customers on topics such as source text and terminology.

If your colleagues also use memoQ, you can create project backups to pick up the project where you left it off. The same way you can synchronize your work between several computers. If your colleagues use other translation tools, you can still export your translation memories, term bases, segmentation rules and other resources for them to use.

Integration with Language Terminal

When your memoQ license is integrated with Language Terminal you don’t need to use email or an external drive to transfer translation packages. You can simply upload them to Language Terminal and share them online.

If you want to use the Language Terminal integration within memoQ, you can register to Language Terminal for free.
